Summary

The book Wonder by R.J. Palacio, was an amazing book, I loved it. The book is about a 10 year old boy named August who was born with a cleft palate. This caused him to have a lot of surgeries throughout, and now he has to go to school. He does not really like it because a lot of people stare at him, talk about him, and are mean. He makes friends along the way, even though at first they found it a little hard because of his face. At the end of the book though Auggie loved school and he was glad his parents made him go. Throughout the book there are different perspectives and it is just a really good book.

Evaluation

I really wanted to cry in a lot of parts of the book. I have not watched the movie, but ever since it came out I have been wanting to watch it, and I am pretty sure I'll cry then. I would most definitely use this book in the classroom, because this book has a lot of morals and values it can teach students. It is also a good way to get the students to learn that it does not matter how you look, it is all about kindness like Mr. Tushman mentioned in the book. The appropriate grade level for this book I would say is around third and up. I would use this book in class, to teach the students about bullying, and acceptance. I think bullying is something that is not really talked about in school or discussed as much, so I would most definitely use this book as an opportunity to teach students about that. I think it could also help them think about how they look at others, and about how they should not judge others for the way they look. They should take into consideration the feelings of that person. The book can really be used for many purposes, especially for teaching students the value of kindness. I honestly loved the book a lot, it showed me just how cruel the world can be, but also that there is still hope for kindness and there are still good people out there. Like Auggie's mom said "...there are more good people on this earth than bad people..." (Palacios 279).
