The book "Hailstones and Halibut Bones" by Mary O'Neill, is a collection of her poems that are about colors. They are poems that talks about a color, and things that are that certain color she is speaking about or pertain to the color. She metaphorically compares the color to objects and just creates this picture using a single color. The poems are about the meaning of a color, or even the feelings that color may create. My favorite poem in the book was the poem titled What is Green? This one was my favorite poem, because green is my favorite color, I just love how I see it everywhere. This poem talks about everything that is green, such as the grass or leaves of tress. It also talks about how the color green is a feeling or what comes after winter. It is just a nice little poem talking about the color green. I also liked the one titled What is purple? That is mainly due to the fact that my sister loves that color and my room is painted purple. Therefore, it made me see the color of my walls differently. The theme of this collection of books like I have mentioned is about the colors. The illustrations in the book were illustrated by John Wallner, and they are just beautiful. They are all in the specific color that the poem is about, and they are very detailed. I would definitely use the book in class, because it teaches the colors in an interesting way. The appropriate grade level for the book would be about kindergarten or first grade. The genre of this book is poetry. The book can be used when it comes to a unit where teaching colors is important. The teacher can go so far as to also teach the students how mixing certain colors gives another color. The jacket of the book is just amazing and even the drawings are so colorful and vivid as well as detailed.
