Summary
This book by Andrew Larsen is a book about a kid named Vincent who goes to live with his aunt Mimi for a while. While at his aunts house, he notices that there is a box of dirt balls in her balcony, Vincent asks her why she has those and she replies by saying that they’re from a secret admirer. They paint a room at his aunts house since he is staying there for most of the summer, and then one day he notices a kid throwing a ball against a tall brick wall. The next day when Vincent sees the kid out there again, he takes some dirt balls and asks the boy if he wants to throw some dirt balls with him. Vincent introduces himself, as does the boy whose name is Vincent. They both throw the dirt balls to the other side of the brick wall and then proceed to throw a ball once they are done. They meet almost every day to toss the ball, and then one day they notice that there are plants where they threw the dirt balls. Vincent’s mom comes to pick him up, but he knows he’ll go back next summer.
Evaluation
I would most definitely use the book in class, because it shows that in a way you cannot judge a book by its cover. What I mean by that, is that they boys and Mimi thought the balls of dirt were just dirt, but in the end they had something special inside of them. The book can be used to teach children that sometimes good things can come out of a bad situation. It also can be used to teach students not to be afraid to make new friends and associate with others. The book is a really good book and can also be used a simple read aloud. The drawings a great and add to the text. They look like they are drawn with a pen and colored with paint or markers.
