Summary
This book by Silvia Lopez is about a boy whose name is really long, and when he was born, his parents along with his whole family all had names that they liked. They could not decide on one name, so they ended up using all the names that his family members suggested as well as the ones that his parents liked. His name ended up being Pacho-Nacho-Nico-Tico-Melo-Felo-Kiko-Rico. Then when it came to his younger brother, no one could come up with a name, so they ended up calling him Juan. They told Juan to call his older brother by his full name, and everyone in town as well. One day though, Juan and Pacho-Nacho were playing, although their mother told them to be careful, they were not. While playing on a tree, Pacho-Nacho was on a branch that snapped, it fell on the side of the river, so he was hanging by the branch. Juan went to tell his parents, but it took him a while because they would not listen to him unless he called his brother by his full name. In the end they were able to save Pacho-Nacho, and once they noticed that Pacho-Nacho’s name was too long, they started calling him Pacho-Nacho because of Juan.
Evaluation
I would most definitely use this book in class, not only because I thought Pacho-Nacho’s name was funny, but as I was reading it to my nephew I could tell he enjoyed it. The drawings in the book were amazing, and they were really well thought out. I would use this book in the class to teach the students that they sometimes have to be careful when it comes to playing around. I would also use the book to teach the students to listen to their parents and be obedient. I would also use the book as a fun read aloud and an enjoyable one. The book can be helpful if there are students who are learning English as a second language, and also for native English speakers since some of the words in the book are in Spanish. The book is a really good book and I really enjoyed reading it.
