Summary
This book by James Marshall, is a different version of "The Three Little Pigs" that I have read. It starts the same way, but it changes along the way. The mom sends her pigs off, and they each make a house of their own. The first one makes his house out of straw although the guy he bought it from told him not to. Then the wolf comes and tells him to let him in but the pig says no, so the wolf huffs and puffs, and eats the pig. The next pig chooses to make his house out of sticks, which is another flimsy material, and as soon as he is done the wolf comes by. The wolf asks him the same thing and the pig answers with a no as well. So the wolf huffs and puffs, and swallows the pig with the entirety of his house. The last pig however is smart and makes his house out of bricks. The wolf comes and asks him to let him in, but the pig says no. The wolf huffs and puffs, but nothing happens to the pigs houses. The wolf tries to outsmart him by asking him to go pick turnips, and apples as well as asking him to go to the fair with him. The wolf however is outsmarted by the pig because they set a time to go, but the pig goes earlier than the time they agree upon. In the end the wolf tries to enter through the chimney, but ends up being cooked and eaten by the pig.
Evaluation
Overall I do not know if I would use the book in class, the reason being that I do not know if I would use this version at least. I would use the other version as a read aloud and to make the kids laugh. The book can be used to teach the students that they should not let people in that are strangers, that they should be careful. The book can also teach the students that they need to really think about their life choices and how the decisions they make can determine the outcome. It can be used as a discussion as well.
